Interested in Joining IMTD?

The Institute of Master Tutors of Driving brings together like-minded professionals and leading practitioners from across the road safety sector.

Membership offers the opportunity to share knowledge, explore new ideas, develop professionally and contribute to meaningful discussions around road safety, training and education.

Only the best shall serve

Experience IMTD Before You Apply

If membership of IMTD is something you would like to pursue, the first step is to attend two of our quarterly meetings.

You can attend as a guest, free of charge, on up to two occasions. This gives you the chance to get a real flavour of what IMTD is about, what membership could offer you, and what you could bring to the Institute.

Membership Application Process

After attending two meetings, you can begin the formal application process.

You will need to request an application form from the Institute’s Secretary, complete it and return it by email with your CV.

You will also be asked to submit a written paper of 1000 to 1500 words on a topic relating to road safety in its broadest sense. This should be written in the style of an essay, be factually accurate and include sources where appropriate. Graphics and charts may be included if relevant.

The Interview

If the Institute’s criteria are met, you will be invited to an interview at one of the quarterly meetings.

You will meet the Executive and then have a semi-informal discussion with the President and two Executive members, in the presence of the wider Executive.

You will be asked to talk about yourself, answer questions about your paper and explain what has attracted you to IMTD.

Successful Applicants

Successful applicants will receive a confirmation letter and membership number. The membership fee is then payable immediately.

Once confirmed, members are entitled to use the insignia of the Institute and the letters M Inst IMTD after their name.

Formal induction into membership takes place annually at the AGM and Awards Lunch.

What IMTD Could Mean for You

Membership gives you the opportunity to:

Mix with like-minded professionals
Meet leading practitioners in road safety
Collaborate on new ventures
Explore new ideas
Enhance your skills and understanding
Question experts in niche areas of research and development
Take part in high-level debates
Access support and advice for your professional work
Learn about current Government plans and contribute to consultation responses

Intelligent Knowledge Transfer

In the months where there is no face-to-face meeting, IMTD holds Intelligent Knowledge Transfer sessions online.

These sessions feature high-quality speakers covering a wide range of road safety related topics. There is usually time for questions, and sessions are recorded so members can watch them later.

IKT sessions are also open to non-members who express an interest in the topic, and may act as a stepping stone towards applying for membership.

AGM and Awards Lunch

The Annual General Meeting is held in September. This is where the President, officers, Executive and auditors are elected for the coming year, and new members are formally inducted.

The AGM is followed by the Awards Lunch, an important event in the IMTD calendar.

Awards recognise individuals and organisations who have made a special contribution to road safety, whether through research, innovation, new initiatives, academic work or a lifetime of service.

Mark of Excellence

The Institute has its own Mark of Excellence, awarded to a body of work or research considered worthy of recognition following scrutiny and assessment by a sub-committee of the Institute.

Take the First Step
